Purpose Jasmine and Cassandra have started working with Scott Chisholm, the founder of Collateral Damage. In a nut shell, Collateral Damage is a project that aims to promote suicide awareness and to train people on the signs/ warnings of someone with suicidal thoughts. There are some goals we would like to accomplish with Scott within Lakehead such as making SafeTALK mandatory for all relevant courses (ex, Nursing, social work, education). SafeTALK is a 3 hour training session about suicide prevention. As a SafeTALK trained suicide helper you are trained to move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss, or avoid suicide, you can identify people who have thoughts of suicide, and you can apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe). The training is something you can keep in yourself forever. We believe it is important to have SafeTALK in Lakehead because knowledge of resources for suicide and mental health are limited in Thunder Bay. Especially for people who come to Lakehead from outside of Thunder Bay, they may not know where to go to receive help. This group will also work towards finding volunteer experiences within the community for Lakehead students to help others with life's difficulties. Some places we may volunteer is canadian mental health, children's aid society and the shelter house.
